14. Love Sings…

The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love, he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.

Zephaniah 3:17

Don’t you just love a good love song? I would be hard pressed to pick my favourite but I reckon Roberta Flack’s The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face would be in my top ten. Such beautiful lyrics in a simple and moving melody that tells the story of a deep and lasting love. I have never had a song of love written just for me so I can only imagine how it would have felt to have this song sung over me. But I think it would have stopped me in my tread, making me feel as though I was the only person in the world, so special that another would write a song just for me.

A while back I had a very frustrating day at work. Several issues had been percolating beneath the surface and they all decided to come to a head. I found myself trying to solve performance issues amongst my staff and resolve another situation that had arisen in a working group I chaired. The following day I read this verse from Zephaniah and a great desire awoke in me to just sit and let God sing over me.

What does it feel like to have the mighty God sing over me? Sing over me, not the whole world, not everyone in my church. A personal song just for me. I believe it is to find myself in a place where I can absolutely rest and be refreshed by God’s love for me. It is a feeling of contentment, of overwhelming peace and beauty – David captures this place in the Psalms:

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me to lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.

Psalm 23:1-2

I have calmed and quieted myself, I am like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child I am content.

Psalm 131:2

God’s song over me is beautiful, it is perfect, it is slow and melodic, soothing my fractious soul. It brings me peace and affirms me as his child. I am satisfied with him; I am stilled and quieted. His love for me expressed in his song renews my soul, my spirit through his song.

Prayer: Lord, you take delight in me, you sing over me in your love. I am not deserving of your song, yet you sing it over me. Words once again fail me as I ponder the magnitude of your love and the beauty that is your song for me. Sing over me today in those times of stress and anguish. Bring me peace and calm through your song.

Amen

Action: Today seek out God and give him the space and time to sing over you. It could be a time of silent reflection or maybe through some of the amazing music and songs others have penned that reflect his song.
