4. The dance…

Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told to you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the earth was founded?

He sits enthroned above the circles of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers.

He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in.

He brings princes to naught and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing…

Lift up your eyes to the heavens: who created all these…

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the creator of the ends of the earth.

Isaiah 40:21-28

Wow, my dancing partner in this thing called life is the creator of the whole earth, the whole universe. Better than the world-champion ballroom dancer. He is the everlasting God. Again… Wow!

He has it all, he made it all, he is above it all. He is majestic, awesome, amazing… superlatives fail him. And yet…

He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak… Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.

Isaiah 40:29-31

God, the creator of the whole earth and universe, cares about us enough to invite us to dance around the world with him. But this dance is to be no ordinary dance – how would that be possible with such a partner?

To dance with God will be like dancing with a lighted stick of dynamite and a big cuddly teddy bear at the same time. God is not to be tamed or shaped into our image. He will lead us into many adventures holding us safe and secure in his arms. God knows the dance he has for me and for you and they are not the same.

Now bear with me in this analogy especially if you are a guy ballroom dancing champion and you know that the guy takes the lead. With God, we must allow him to take the lead in the dance. Our role is always to follow and learn the dance from him. He is our master teacher and our life partner in this dance of life.

I have an image of a group of line dancers. There is an amazing teacher out front. His technique is perfect, he moves into the dance with ease and expertise, he feels the music as he glides across the floor – he is the dance master. We follow him – less than perfect, ill at ease in these new steps but willing to learn from the best and to be taken on the journey towards perfection.

Sometimes he will lead you and I in a gracious and beautiful waltz and then the tempo will change and the dance become hip hop.

Sometimes he will lead us in the dance to the edges of precipices and then through lush green pastures. Sometimes the dance will involve others, sometimes we will dance alone with him. Sometimes through the valley of the shadow of death and sometimes across amazing mountain tops.

But always we will dance together with our God in the lead until the end of our days.

Prayer: Lord, I know that the dance you have for each of us to dance is unique, planned and created by you alone. Give me the strength, the ability, the courage, and the fortitude to learn the dance with you.

Amen

Action: Today, Look at the day ahead as a dance, with God in the lead. Contemplate how it might be different from any other day. Ask God for a new “step” that you can learn from him and put into practise.
